This Week.. (And Urgent Messages About Tonight!)

Welcome to your first proper social bulletin of term, there a plenty of events going on this week to relieve the stress of this last week, but before that I want to remind you of two important things going on today...
** Emergency JCR Meeting **
Please please please come along to the meeting tonight, it's 6:30pm in the JCR. It'll be a really short meeting and has been called purely to resolve the current Social Secretary / Summer Ball situation. There'll be a chance to question Exec on exactly what happened and where it all went wrong! Then we'll be voting on a motion to create a Summer Ball Committee, if more than 80 people show up and vote it through it'll create a seperate group similar to Social Committee but purely responsible for the Summer Ball. We need to resolve this soon as preparations for the ball need to start asap, or, to quote Sam Roseveare, "the summer ball will be shit".
** Formal Signup Re-opens **
Ok so no prizes for guessing why there was a cockup here, but signup for the Formal this Thursday will re-open TONIGHT at 8:30pm. If you've already signed up, there's no need to do it again, but if you want to go there are still plenty of places. Don't forget to follow the new signup rules though!

Quiz Night
After the excitement of an emergency meeting stick around for a quiz night in the Bar, this week courtesy of PA Committee. Usual fun and games.
Chinese New Year Bar Party
Another big night in the bar! Chinese themed drinks and decorations, I'm told there will be "lash o' plenty". Contact Louise for more details.
Subotica Reggae Night
My personal favourite of the week (unrelated to the fact I'm working at it) is Subotica this Monday night at Loveshack. Trojan Soundsystem presents Earl Gateshead with MC's Gideon Zinger & Brother Culture w/Quadraphonix + RrobT b2b Beardman. Legendary Recording Artists including Lee Perry, Dr Alimantado, Tippa Irie, Dillinger, Dennis Alcapone, Horace Andy and Gregory Isaacs have all worked with the Soundsystem and they have worldwide acclaim for representing reggae. Fancy Doing a Firewalk?
Fancy doing something a bit exciting this term...? Then sign up for Durham University Development Abroad Society’s sponsored FIREWALK!! Enjoy prancing over fire while raising money for a good cause! The walk is on Saturday the 29th of February at Van Mildert college from 6pm.
To sign-up come and visit our stall at the Re-Freshers’ Fair in the DSU next Thursday (the 29th) from 10am until 3pm, or if you can’t make that, then send us an email! Minimum sponsorship is £50, so bring along a £25 deposit and another £25 in the form of a cheque as a guarantee (we won’t touch this second cheque unless you fail to turn up on the day and pay the remaining £25). The costs cover a training seminar on the evening of the walk, so don’t worry, firewalking is perfectly safe!
Formal and Disco
This Thursday welfare is hosting our formal dinner, don't forget you can still sign up for seats tonight at 8:30pm when signup re-opens. Details will be confirmed during the week.
Open Mic Night
Enjoy a relaxed, free night at Van Mildert Bar!
Everyone welcome to get up and play as many songs as you wish, or to just watch and relax listening to good musicians! From 8pm onwards, a great event to start a night off, or just relax for a few hours and enjoy music!

Van Mildert College Music Committee invites you to the third Van Mildert College Sunday Afternoon Recital of 2008/09!
When and where? Sunday, 1st Feb. in the Ustinov Room at 4pm until 5pm.
