Obviously when disposing of old hardware in an environment where staff frequently handle sensitive and confidential information it is critical that proper measures are taken to ensure no data could be recovered from computers, laptops, etc.
This was fun!.
Disposal #3
Date of Disposal: 26/07/2007
Goods Disposed Of: RM Laptop
Method of Disposal: Running it Over!
Tools Used: a Fiat Punto
Wielder of Destruction: Mr Jennings, Mr Burrows and Mr Nicholls all took their turns.

Outcome: The power lights came on, but nothing much actually happened. The screens were shot and the batteries didn’t stay in place properly. The best bit, which unfortunately was not captured on film was when we used two laptops as ramps to get up a kerb with. Film also missed Alex nearly crashing my car into a signpost…

Disposal #1
Date of Disposal: 08/07/2007
Goods Disposed Of: RM Laptop
Method of Disposal: Disassembly (as small pieces as we could get it into)
Tools Used: Just a screwdriver!
Wielder of Destruction: Mr Jennings

Outcome: Well, we hooked a few parts back together (whilst it was all in pieces on the desk), we got the fans to start up turned on, that’s about it.

Make your avatar the album art of the currently playing song.
This little project has really taken off, and in terms of number of downloads is my most popular software. This section contains downloads, help, resources and more information about the project.
A new version will be under way soon with new features and a new look, we are also looking to make language modules to accommodate our non-English user base. To get involved with coding or translation please get in touch.

URMANT
Manages the process of writing, storing and checking teacher's comments on students, before turning them into references (with UCAS specifically in mind).
This is my first serious commercial project that I have launched myself (rather than coded as a bespoke system). Rather than a program download this project is a subscription service. Please visit the URMANT website for further information.

CCS – Clip Control Systems
A business management suite, initially focused on Customer Relations Management but now expanding to manage stock of materials and production management.
The solution is engineered for the L.R. Group of Companies (manufacturers of Jubilee Clips) to take over from a network of spreadsheets and simple databases and work alongside an off-the-shelf business mangagement solution.
Written in VB 6.0, with MS-SQL server backend and an ASP web interface, this project is still in the early stages of development although it has been in production use for more than two years now.

verdoc – Document Revision Tracking
This web based utility is currently under development but once completed will be a simple but functional way to store document revisions and track document issues. This tool is designed to help small businesses be fully BS EN ISO 9000 compliant this tool and will be freely available under the GPL.
BS 9000 requires businesses to store a register of all their quality-control related documents such as process diagrams, procedures, blueprints and schematics and manuals. This software stores this information in a simple to use, easy to access online database that lets you track who is revising what documents, automatically notify issuees if their document is out of date and keep a record of the location of all your documents – both on and offline.
Being web based the software requires no client-side installation and can be installed on an intranet or internet server, depending on the level of interest I will probably provide managed hosting for the software at a very reasonable price. verdoc is build in php and is compatible with most major database server software, although it is tailored for mysql.

Obviously when disposing of old hardware in an environment where staff frequently handle sensitive and confidential information it is critical that proper measures are taken to ensure no data could be recovered from computers, laptops, etc.
Naturally when it became clear that over the next few months we will need to “Securely Dispose” of a dozen or so old laptops (all already suffering various ailments that essentially render them worthless and barely usable) I decided that the destruction of this hardware needs to be done properly, and clearly documented along the way – a la blog.
We’ve actually already done #1 too, but the photos are on the other camera – which is at work. Whoops.
Disposal #2
Date of Disposal: 09/07/2007
Goods Disposed Of: RM Laptop
Method of Disposal: Puncture Wounds
Tools Used: Electric Drill, Hole Saw, Soldering Iron
Wielder of Destruction: Mr Nicholls

Outcome: Surprisingly the laptop started to boot despite the holes, no display – and the motherboard beeps in “motherboard error” beep code pattern – but it kinda worked…
