Obviously when disposing of old hardware in an environment where staff frequently handle sensitive and confidential information it is critical that proper measures are taken to ensure no data could be recovered from computers, laptops, etc.
Naturally when it became clear that over the next few months we will need to “Securely Dispose” of a dozen or so old laptops (all already suffering various ailments that essentially render them worthless and barely usable) I decided that the destruction of this hardware needs to be done properly, and clearly documented along the way – a la blog.
We’ve actually already done #1 too, but the photos are on the other camera – which is at work. Whoops.
Disposal #2
Date of Disposal: 09/07/2007
Goods Disposed Of: RM Laptop
Method of Disposal: Puncture Wounds
Tools Used: Electric Drill, Hole Saw, Soldering Iron
Wielder of Destruction: Mr Nicholls

Outcome: Surprisingly the laptop started to boot despite the holes, no display – and the motherboard beeps in “motherboard error” beep code pattern – but it kinda worked…
Driving home (perhaps a tad faster than the 40mph limit) from a brilliant night at Subs, 5 in the morning, windows down, wind in my hair, watching the sun come up, “Sweet Child of Mine” blaring from the stereo, absolutely shattered from less than 6 hours sleep in 48 hours and way too much dancing. That is life. Love It.

Please make it happen! Someone would come with me…. right…?
I got this today…
Hi, my name is …. and I’m PC Today’s collaborator.
PC Today is one of the best selling computer magazine in Spain and is published every two weeks. We have planned some special contents for our readers, and we’re planning to include a special CD with the best freeware and shareware programs available. This is a very special occasion for us, as we do not use to include software with our magazine. We rely solely on our editorial contents to sell the magazine and that makes this CD and its contents a unique giveaway.
We plan to include this CD in PC Today’s N.157, which will be on sale on the end of October. This CD will be enclosed with every PC Today’s N. 157 issue at no additional cost and the planned circulation is 65.000 issues. In that number we’ll also include some editorial pages explaining how to use some of the selected programs.
Since yours is one of the chosen applications, we’d like to get your permission so we can include iTunes2MSN in this CD.
I really really need to start making my software multilingual!
64,000 CDs with my software on? Wow, Really!? Wow!
